Guest Post: Christian Novels Stir Your Curiosity to Dig Deeper in Scripture, a Message from Mesu Andrews
My name is Mesu Andrews, and I—like you—have found great encouragement through The Vessel Project. Thanks for stopping by today!
One thing I appreciate about The Vessel Project is its strong commitment to faith-building resources—both fiction and non-fiction. I write biblical novels—books built on the immutable Truth of God’s Word, adding well-researched historical data, and then filling gaps with plausible fiction.
My passion has always been biblical research. I love to dig into the cultural context, original languages, and archaeological discoveries that inform our deeper understanding of God’s Word. Perhaps my interest was fanned into flame during a tour of Israel in February of 2000.
Meir, our Jewish guide, coaxed our bus driver beyond the blockades barring entry to the Golan Heights. Our group grew silent watching fences wiz by labeled with land mine warnings, but Meir assured us we must see the biblical site of Caesarea Philippi. We arrived at a mountainous area, left our bus behind, and climbed a few slippery rocks. Before us was a yawning, 30-foot cave from which rushed a 10-foot wide river, creating a chilly spray. A 100-foot rock face towered above us with carved niches dotting the mountainside.
Our Jewish guide, who knew the New Testament better than we did, pointed to the niches and recited Matthew 16:13,
“When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’” (NIV)
He then looked at us and explained why Jesus brought His disciples to this location to ask the question:
“The niches carved into the rock faces were filled with graven images—Greek gods, Roman gods, baals, all the pagan gods of His day. Jesus purposely brought His disciples to Caesarea Philippi, perhaps even pointing to the stone gods in the mountain niches, and asked disciples…‘Where do I rank among all these?’”
Meir’s explanation began a landslide of questions in my soul. I wondered how every rock, river, and road affected the biblical passage I read with my 21st-century mind. The ancient Middle-Eastern culture and archaeological context was suddenly essential to a fuller interpretation of the Word of God I so treasured. My insatiable desire to know my Savior, my God, my All was piqued on that journey—and has never waned.
I must confess the truth to you, Dear Reader. The reason I write biblical novels…is because it gives me a perfect excuse to dig deep into God’s Word! But that isn’t the only reason I write. The most important reason is to encourage you to dig into Scripture.
Biblical novels aren’t intended to replace Bible reading. They’re intending to stir your curiosity and send you running to find God’s Truth for yourself.
I pray that as you notice biblical novels and other faith-building resources mentioned on The Vessel Project, you’ll click and enjoy the rich treasures that await you!
